Southerners now?
Rachel, Micah, and I ate at our first Chick-fil-A a couple weeks ago. While living in MI, I frequently heard about this restaurant chain from those who had been in the South before. I figured we should make it a priority upon our arrival here. (It also helped that we were giving two coupons for free sandwiches. Thanks, FRC.)
While this certainly won’t be a food review worthy of ma’ona, I will say I
really enjoyed the experience. They had a huge vat of honey-mustard sauce where you could pour your own amount. I’m a sucker for honey-mustard. Rachel commented that she’s never seen such polite and helpful employees at a fast food restaurant. (”Yes, ma’am.” “It would be my pleasure.”)
I’ll certainly be going back for more. Does this mean we’re Southerners now? If so, that seems like a much less painful path than eating other foods.

I’m not sure how to break this to you, but my mom has lived in the deep South (Florida, Mississippi) for almost 40 years, and people still (politely of course) refer to her as a “Yankee”.
You’ll try grits eventually … just make sure that you don’t treat them like cream of wheat. A little butter, salt and pepper and then mix them with your eggs.
But stay away from chitlins.
Grits are disgusting, just for the record. My mom’s whole family is from Kentucky, so I’ve had my share of southern food, and even though I just can’t get into grits, I can most certainly get into Waffle House. That’s good stuff.
And also for the record, I’m so happy to see you have a blog, though I don’t think I was ever someone pushing for you to start one. So I’m an impartial voice.
Thanks for the tips, Robby. Grocery stores have end-cap displays for all the different brands of grits, rather than the 2 Liters of Coke you’d find in a display at some place like Meijer. That was our first clue that grits might be a bit more popular here.
Chitlins. I’ve heard of them. I debated about looking up what they actually are, but eventually my curiosity got the best of me. Whoa, I think your advice will be easy to follow.
Now Waffle House sounds like a place I could feel at home.
It’s always impressed me that Meijer sells chitlins by the gallon bucket.
